The Chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Crin Antonescu, considers that by refusing to ensure an alternative to the current government together with the liberals, the PSD is showing just as much irresponsibility as the current government.
The statement of Crin Antonescu comes after the chairman of the PSD, Victor Ponta said on Monday that he does not see the possibility of a joint government of his party and the PNL, as voters would be forced to choose between right wing and left wing political measures.
According to Mediafax, Crin Antonescu stressed that the PNL wants to govern by itself, "without any heirs to the former National Salvation Front (FSN)": "It is a legitimate aspiration, and, in principle, the PNL would like to govern on its own, without any successors to the FSN, regardless of whether it"s the PD-L, the PSD or the UNPR. The problem with politics, and this a thing that the leaders of the PSD know as well, it that you have to adapt to reality. When we get to the moment of elections, whether they happen earlier or not, every party will do its best to get a number of votes big enough to allow it to govern by itself. If anybody gets that number of votes, will govern by themselves. From my point of view, the Social-Democrat Party is just as irresponsible as the government, which means we are not encouraged to provide an alternative to the current government right now ".
When asked if the PNL would be interested in governing with the Social-Democrat Party, Antonescu said that a decision on this matter would be made when the time is right. Concerning an eventual discussion on the formation of a majority to suspend president Traian Băsescu, the leader of the PNL said that there is no reason for liberals to discuss this subject: "We have pretty much run out of solutions to create such a majority. If the PSD wants to govern by itself, I say good luck with that ".
• Dragnea: We are not interested in a governing program based on compromise
The secretary general of the PSD, Liviu Dragnea, yesterday said that social democrats are not interested in a governing program based on making compromises.
When asked to comment the statements made by the chairman of the National Liberal Party, Crin Antonescu, on the "irresponsibility" of social-democrats to accept a government in association with the PNL, Liviu Dragnea replied: "The PSD has a very clear goal objective, which is to present this autumn a new social project, a social democrat project. We want the National Liberal Party to present a right-wing program, because we consider that the National Liberal Party is the only right-wing party, the PD-L is a party without a doctrine, a bubble that will burst soon ".
Dragnea added that the PSD and the PNL could cooperate in the Parliament, "in order to stop the abuse of the current power". A joint government is not being considered right now.
"We can talk about this after the elections. We are not interested in a governing program riddled with compromises, we had one and it didn"t work out at all", Dragnea concluded.
