The Arad Municipality has decided to bring several historical buildings in the city to their full tourism potential by restoring them and giving them a "Viennese look." The Municipality is preparing to start the project headlined "Rehabilitation of the Old Historical Centre," which will include the modernization of 12 streets in the historical city centre delimited by the Serbian Church, the Roman Square and Traian"s Bridge.
Mayor Gheorghe Falca said the Municipality would soon sign a financing agreement with the Ministry of Development, which would coordinate the disbursement of E.U. funding. "The project has entered a phase of technical and financial evaluation. After tenders and the other necessary steps, the actual works will start this fall at the latest," Mayor Falca Added.
In addition to the complex rehabilitation of Traian"s Bridge, over 4.4 kilometres of urban roads will be modernized. The City will also rehabilitate water distribution networks, sewerage networks and rainwater drainage networks. Approximately 100 street lighting units will be replaced. The project also includes the reconstruction of road infrastructure and underground pipe networks, the rehabilitation of tramway tracks, the street lighting system and the consolidation of a century-old bridge.
The project will be financed through non-reimbursable funding made available by the European Union through the Regional Operational Programme 2007 - 2013. The overall value of the investment is 15 million EUR.
