The Bucharest Electoral Office yesterday asked the Prefect"s Office to start an investigation regarding some 35,000 blank ballots reported missing in Bucharest. In turn, Bucharest Prefect Catalin Deaconescu said he was going to sue the Official Journal of Romania over the missing ballots in the second round of the local elections and claim damages for the inadequate performance of the contract signed with them. Bucharest Electoral Office Chair Ileana Danaila said there was no explanation for the missing ballots and could not accept the statement of the Official Journal, namely that the problem had been caused by a printing error. "They said a technical error had occurred and the ballots had not actually been printed. I think that is not good enough and they need to come up with solid arguments," Danaila explained. She added that the missing 35,000 ballots had not affected the voting process. Danaila added that Sector 4 reported 10,000 missing ballots, Sector 5 - 3,000 ballots, Sector 6 - 1,725 ballots and Sector 3 - 942 ballots. Sector 2 had not submitted a report yet. The Prefect"s Office says an error happened during the printing and packaging of the ballots and the Official Journal was the only one responsible for it.
