Acer Romania expects to double notebook sales this year to approximately 100,000 units and is aiming for a 20% market share as the overall notebook market is set to double. "The market will grow faster this year, too, after having grown 70% in 2007. Even a two-fold increase is possible. Acer is a consolidated brand both locally and globally and we are currently aiming for 20% of the local market," Acer"s Bogdan Iftimie told NewsIn.
Acer was quite successful with the Gemstone concept for the consumer range Aspire and the Profile concept for the business range Travel Mate. Plans for this year include an entry-level 9-10 inch notebook. For the moment, the notebook penetration ratio in Romania is 5 to 100 persons, approximately 10 times less than in Western countries.
"The penetration rate is approximately 20%, up from 5% in the last two years. In Western European countries, the rate is 40-50%, so there"s a clear potential to double the market in the next two years," Iftimie said. The Taiwan-based company sold nearly 10 million notebooks in Europe last year.
