Twilight at the NBR?

Voices claim that Mugur Isărescu is going to step down: according to some, he will go into retirement, according to others, he will become prime-minister

Mugur Isărescu may hand in his resignation as governor of the NBR by October, three separate sources in the financial industry told us. Some of these voices claim that Mugur Isărescu will retire, despite the fact that his current term as governor of the NBR still has four years left, others say that he will take over the position of prime-minister in a government of technocrats, which will prepare next year's elections.

In the second case, Mugur Isărescu may only be detached from the NBR, as has happened in 1999, when he held the position of prime-minister for a year.

Contacted by BURSA, the officials of the press office of the NBR told us: "According to the Decision of the Parliament no. 27 of June 16th 2014, published in the Official Gazette, Part I 443 of June 17 2014, the Romanian Parliament has passed the decision to appoint the members on the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Romania, with the nomination of its executive management, for a period of 5 years, starting on October 11 2014".

Among the names being discussed which may replace lui Mugur Isărescu we have first deputy-governor Florin Georgescu, deputy-governor Bogdan Olteanu, Nicolae Dănilă, currently president of Transfond, as well as Traian Halalai, executive director at Eximbank.

Mugur Isărescu is the longest lasting central bank governor in the world, and he has been in charge of the National Bank of Romania for 25 years. According to the polls, he is one of the personalities that Romanians trust the most.
