Veterinarians recommend that the population of the counties of Ilfov, Buzău and Olt refrain from eating pork meat until the final outcome of the investigation initiated by the ANSVSA concerning the dioxin-contaminated meat imported from Ireland is known.
"I recommend that residents of Ilfov, Buzău and Olt who have purchased meat recently refrain from eating it even though on the short term infested meat consumption will not cause serious problems", stated yesterday, Liviu Rusu, head of the National Authority for Sanitary, Veterinary and Food Safety (ANSVSA), quoted by Agerpres.
The head of ANSVSA stated that ingesting dioxin contaminated meat might create skin problems in the long term and when ingested in large amounts, dioxin might accumulate in the liver and cause certain types of cancer in adults. For this reason the recall and destruction of the dioxin infested meat has been decided, even though the health risks are low in the case of short term exposure.
