Autumn brings university rankings

Versiunea în limba română

Domestic universities are preparing for a new academic year, and some of them have reasons to be proud of their work in the past. The Bucharest University of Economic Studies has announced that it ranks first in Romania for the fifth consecutive time according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, and it is positioned between 801st and 1,000th place globally. According to the educational institution, "The Bucharest University of Economic Studies, the leader in economic and public administration education in Romania, has been ranked as the best university in Romania for the fifth consecutive time, according to the 2024 edition of the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published on September 27."

The 20th annual edition of THE World University Rankings includes nearly 2,000 universities worldwide, following the evaluation of 2,673 institutions from 127 countries, a record in recent years. The international ranking agency considers five main aspects to define the ranking methodology: teaching and learning environment, research environment, research quality and impact, knowledge transfer to industry, and the international outlook of the university.

"Babeş-Bolyai" University in Cluj-Napoca is ranked in the Times Higher Education rankings between 1,001st and 1,200th globally and 980th in research. It also holds the third position (the first in terms of industry relations) in the country. According to the Cluj university, "UBB on the podium in the Times Higher Education ranking: 1,001-1,200 globally (980 in research) and the third position (the first in terms of industry relations) in the country. Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca (UBB) ranks 1,001-1,200 globally internationally and third in the country (alongside three other universities) in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, released today, September 27, 2023. In the country, UBB is first in the industry-related component, and its best positioning is in the research component (productivity, reputation, revenue), where it ranks 980th globally. UBB is above the median value (percentiles) of the entire international THE ranking in the following indicators: (1) teaching/education reputation, (2) research reputation, (3) research income, (4) research excellence, (5) research impact, (6) patents, (7) international research collaborations-publications, and (7) international student mobility." UBB Rector, Prof. Dr. Daniel David, stated: "I am pleased to see all (4) science universities in Cluj in the ranking! As I have said in other contexts, fluctuations in UBB's position in various rankings - e.g., presence, absence, different rankings/rankings - are mainly determined by the different nuances in the ranking criteria (for example, in THE, the size of the institution is nullified by size-adjusted indicators, and contributions from books/chapters are eliminated), but they are corrected through meta-rankings, and UBB has the best performance in its history in this regard. Thus, in the "University Meta-Ranking" (first published in 2016 for 2016 by the Ministry of Education and subsequently, with the same methodology, by other academic organizations), which brings together 9 major international university rankings, UBB has consistently held the first position in the country and has consistently improved its performance from 2016 to 2022. In the "National Meta-Ranking" (first published in 2022 for 2021 by the Ministry of Education), which combines 9 major international university rankings, UBB has consistently held the first position in the country and has improved its performance from 2021/2022 to 2022/2023." According to the statement, throughout 2023, considering all the university/national meta-rankings published so far, UBB has the best performance in Romania (except for this THE ranking): (1) Position 801 - 850 in the global British QS ranking - first in Romania; also, in this ranking for Europe, it is the first in the country, ranked 15th in Eastern Europe and 260th in Europe. (2) Position 923 (top 4.5%) in the CWUR/Centre for World University Ranking - first in Romania; (3) Position 1157 (Quartile 1) in the Scimago university ranking - first in Romania; (4) Position 1058 in the Leiden ranking - first in Romania.
