Over 150 employees of Belgian Metal Technology (BMT) Romania organized a street protest in Iasi yesterday to express their discontent with the company"s salary policy.

The employees protested for some three hours asking for additional payments for working Saturdays, a length of service bonus, salary raises above the inflation rate and the payment of promised salary increments. Union leader Mihai Sacaleanu said further protests would take place without an interruption of the work in hope that negotiations may start.

"All they say is lies that do not affect us in any way. This is why we are not going to take any measure against the protest. If they agreed with the framework employment contract why are they trying to change it now," said BMT Romania manager Liuben Bernstein.

The union members will protest for three hours every day until Friday. BMT Romania is part of the Belgian-based BMT, which concluded last year with 230 million USD in turnover. The group operates in over 12 countries. The BMT factory in Iasi produces various parts for the metallurgical, machine-building and aerospace industries. This year, BMT will celebrate 10 years on the Romanian market.
