Out of the 30,000 companies registered with the General Department of Public Finances in Iaşi, 17,235 have unpaid debts towards the consolidated budget of the state worth 606.7 million lei. "The first five months of 2009 saw a 70% increase in uncollected taxes, over the same period of 2008. Still, these arrears can be recovered, because most of the companies that owe those taxes are still active. In order to recover these debts we can resort to foreclosures, letters of formal notice, asset and bank account seizure", said Maria Ţăran, spokesperson for DGFPJ Iaşi.
Out of the total of 606.7 million lei owed by active Ia i-based companies, 200 million lei are arrears from 2007, 140 million lei are arrears from 2008, and the remaining 266 million lei are debts accumulated in the first five years of this year.
4,555 companies that were declared inactive in mid-June left behind sizeable arrears, amounting to 155 million lei.
