The National Consumer Protection Authority (ANPC) inspected some 1,300 cosmetic producers, importers, distributors and retailers across the country in March. The inspectors found irregularities at 1001 companies and decided to pull cosmetics worth 72,797 RON from the market and suspend sales of products worth 933,146 RON.
In most cases, the products suspended from sales were not accompanies by the legally required information for consumers. Such cases were found in several counties, including Vrancea, Timis, Suceava, Galati and Bucharest. The legally required information is name of the product, name of the producer, country of origin, instructions for use, validity when sealed, validity after it is unsealed.
In Bucharest, Bihor County and Mures County, inspectors found that the proper translation into Romanian of the instruction for use did not exist. Additionally, the product files also did not exist in some cases. Such files must exist in all European Community countries and be available at the producer, authorized representative or retailer of imported products.
Under these circumstances, ANPC issued fines totalling 1,528,500 RON to 530 companies. The most severe fines were given to retailers selling products that had expired 3-10 months before (shampoo, liquid soap, hair balm) or were improperly packed or did not have proof of authenticity.
