Nine employees of the Transfusion Center in Slobozia and doctors from other hospitals in the county have been accused of charging patients for transfusions, even though, according to the law, transfusions must be made free of charge.
They have been indicted for abuse in office and violation of the special law concerning blood transfusions.
According to the spokesperson of the Prosecutors' Office of the Court of Slobozia, Andreea Culceari, the suspects would charge between 50 and 100 lei for a vial of blood, and more for rare blood types.
According to the prosecutors, several people who were in critical condition died as they were not given the transfusions they would have needed.
"Seven people died. I can't say that they wouldn't have probably died anyway. The idea is however that they died without receiving a transfusion", said Daniela Dediu, first-prosecutor of the Prosecutors' Office of Slobozia.
According to Daniela Dediu, the money would be divided at the end of the day, most of it going to the director of the transfusion center, who coordinated the activity.
The head of the Transfusion Center of Slobozia and five nurses of that institution were detained, and two other nurses have been placed under legal restrictions pending trial.
The prosecutors started the investigation following the reports in the press. Several individuals subsequently filed complaints.
