The current account deficit gained 104.01% in the first five months of the year compared to the corresponding period of 2006 reaching 5.94 billion EUR amid a serious deterioration of the trade balance, according to the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
"The trade balance deficit had a decisive influence on the current account as it amounted to 6.13 billion EUR, up by 75.9% from January-May 2006," the press release indicate. Nevertheless, on the services segment, the balance closed with a surplus of 317 million EUR, up by 84.3% year-on-year. Transportation and travel generated deficits of 145 million EUR and 76 million EUR respectively, whereas the column "other services" saw a 538 million EUR surplus, up by 94.92% year-on-year.
The revenues balance posted a deficit of 1.91 billion EUR, up by 56.15% from the first five months of last year. The current transfers balance (including the money sent home by Romanians working abroad) posted a surplus of 1.79 billion EUR, up by 9.92% year-on-year.
