Iasi Mayor Gheorghe Nichita announced that, after lengthy search and consideration, the U.S.-based Delphi had found a suitable site to build a Diesel engine factory.

"We have received a letter from them, requesting the land currently occupied by the sports complex and Tineretului Stadium, as well as a nearby plot. The investor needs 15 hectares, but the sports complex only has five, which we can make available provided that they build another sports complex somewhere else in the city. We will try to offer them as much support as we can, because Iasi needs investors that can generate a profit and stabilize the local labor market," Nichita said.

The Moldova Air Club owns the remainder of the needed land and it is difficult to say whether they will agree to renounce it. "That land has been property of the Air Club since King Ferdinand"s time and we cannot do anything about this matter," Deputy Mayor Constantin Neculau said.

According to the Iasi City Hall, the investment could reach some 150 million USD and generate nearly 2,000 jobs, thus solving the problem with the workers laid off from several major factories in the area. Delphi Corp. was part of General Motors until 1999. The company has been laying off workers in the U.S. and is currently seeking to expand on emerging markets.
