Putin: Russia is countering NATO's missile defense program

Russia will counter NATO's defense program by developing new attack weapons, capable of penetrating that shield, according to statements made by Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Attending a forum which was held in Soch, concerning cooperation and the protection of borders in the Black Sea region, Putin told military officials that by developing the ballistic missile defense system, Washington seeks to "neutralize" Russia's nuclear intimidation strategy, namely to obtain a "decisive military superiority".

According to the Kremlin leader, Moscow will respond by developing "attack systems capable of piercing any missile-defense system". Vladimir Putin said: "Over the last three years, companies in the military-industrial complex have created and successfully tested a number of potential weapons systems capable of performing combat missions in a layered missile defense system. Such systems have already begun entering the army this year. And now, we are talking about new types of weapons".

According to Kremlin's spokesperson, Dmitri Peskov, Russia intends to spend less than the US on the anti-missile system.

The Sochi forum, which was attended by officials of Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Russia, has approached the results of border cooperation in 2015 and has reviewed the activities conducted in that regard in the aforementioned countries. The talks have focused on setting new avenues of cooperation and programs for joint action in 2016.
