The chemical plant Doljchim is preparing for shutdown, according to General Manager Dumitru Ungureanu, quoted by Agerpres. He said he had given instructions that all technical measures required for the shutdown be taken immediately. According to him, considering the temperature trend in this period of time, the situation should not call for a shutdown.

"If the temperature drops to minus 15 or minus 20, the natural gas pressure decreases and, because individual consumers are a priority, industrial consumers could be cut off. Even if Doljchim is cut off from the gas supply, the factory will not halt production and send the 1,100 employees home, because the other factories, which do not use gas, continue to operate. The nitric acid factory will continue to operate, the ammonium nitrate factory will continue to operate and so will the chemical fertilizer packing facility. The ammonia factory is the only gas consumer, but it only employs 150 people," Ungureanu added.

The Doljchim GM further said that, should the plant be cut off from the gas supply, sufficient stockpiles of raw materials existed to allow it to continue to produce chemical fertilizers. "Based on my 30 years of experience in the business, I believe there will not be any problems. Even if the gas supply is stopped, it will only last for one or two weeks. Anyway, we are prepared to deal with any situation," Ungureanu added.
