Dollar rising on expectations that the Fed may hike interest rates

Yesterday, the dollar gained against the Euro on the international markets, after the chairman of the US Central Bank (Federal Reserve - Fed), Ben S. Bernanke, said that "inflation needs to be watched very closely", spurring speculation that an interest rate hike could happen earlier than expected.

The Fed has kept the interest rate between 0 - 0.25% since September 2008.

The dollar gained 0.44% at 09:55, on the New York market, with the exchange rate reaching 1.4158 units/Euro, down from 1.4221 units/Euro on the previous day.

On Monday, Bernanke said that the officials of the American Central Bank were "ready to respond adequately to inflationary pressure", meaning that they would pay more attention to the evolution of inflation. But before the Fed raises the interest rate, the markets are expecting a similar measure from the European Central Bank. According to analyst estimates, on Thursday, the ECB will raise the policy rate by 0.25%, to 1.25%, up from the current record low of 1%.

Yesterday"s depreciation of the Euro was also affected by the fact that "Moody"s Investors Service" cut the rating for Portugal"s long term debt.
