Electricity consumption has gained 5% since the beginning of July compared to early June because of high temperatures, according to Victor Ionescu, the CEO of OPCOM, the company that operates the Romanian energy market. "The additional drain, caused, for instance, by air conditioners, was 700 MWh/h. As a percentage, that would be 8-10% more than in June. The extra energy spent with the irrigation systems was 300 MWh/h, which is 3-4%. The average would therefore be around 5%," he added.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INS) the overall electricity consumption in the first five months of 2007 was 21.27 billion KWh, up by 0.5% than in the corresponding period of 2006. Individual consumption increased by 3.6%, whereas public lighting required by 6.8% more than in the referenced period. Approximately 5.7% of the energy output was exported.
