Tonny Lybek, IMF: Romania imports expensive gas and then sells it cheaply to specific companies

The representative of the IMF in Romania, Tonny Lybek, recently said that, despite the fact that it has significant, but not sufficient reserves of natural gas, Romania imports natural gas from Russia at high prices and sells it cheaply to specific companies. He said, quoted by Agerpres: "Romania is forced to import natural gas from Russia at a high price and then sells it to certain companies. Romania is an EU member state and it wants to conform to the European policies concerning the price of natural gas".

Tonny Lybek considers that the main issue which Romania is facing is the energy sector, mentioning the inefficient use of energy, the subsidizing of the big industry which inefficiently consumes a lot of energy, the insufficient exploration of its own resources". Lybek showed that the infrastructure programs also remain a problem due to lack of funds.

"The authorities have a program for developing infrastructure which is not being implemented, given the funds which exist to support it", Lybek said.
