EU Members and the European Parliament have agreed on a legal initiative forcing EU Members to secure 20% of their energy requirements from renewable sources by 2020, which is one of the essential components of the EU energy - climate package. According to AFP, each of the 27 Members will have a national objective to be pursued within a EU-wide action plan. An immediate effect will consist of significant investments in renewable energy sources, which are still fairly expensive. Member State negotiators and the European Parliament have also come to an agreement on the controversial subject of bio-fuels, which will have to meet a number of "green" criteria in order to be acceptable under this plan. Bio-fuels, which have to account for 10% of the overall fuel consumption of the transportation sector by 2020, compared to 3% presently, had caused much turmoil among environmental organizations. According to NewsIn, Brussels had promised a list of strict criteria for a sustainable transition to bio-fuels, without affecting the forests and faming lands of developing countries at a time when the price of foodstuff is rocketing.
