Eurobarometer: Citizens support EU energy policies

Versiunea în limba română

Environmental protection and resource saving are supported by more and more people. A Eurobarometer survey published by the European Commission highlights the strong support of European citizens for the European Union's energy policies. According to the data, 77% of respondents believe that the EU should play a stronger role in coordinating energy policies, reflecting a growing awareness of the importance of the transition to clean and sustainable energy.

Economic opportunities and reduction of energy dependence

Eight out of ten Europeans agree that the EU's climate targets will generate new jobs and attract significant investment in the renewable energy sector. In addition, 76% of respondents believe that these policies will help reduce dependence on energy imports, especially in the current geopolitical context marked by instability, such as the war in Ukraine. Diversification of energy sources is seen by 62% of survey participants as a key solution to achieving the EU's climate goals, and 54% emphasized the importance of saving energy whenever possible. At the same time, almost half of respondents (40%) indicated that EU energy policy should focus on reducing prices for consumers, a crucial aspect in the context of rising energy costs in recent years.

Valorization of innovations and investments in green energy

Regarding EU policies over the past five years, European citizens noted the Union's contribution to supporting investments in renewable energy sources (35%) and innovative energy technologies (27%). These initiatives are seen as essential for ensuring affordable energy prices and for developing long-term sustainable solutions.

Individual savings behaviors

The survey shows that European citizens not only support macro-level energy policies, but also take direct action to reduce energy consumption. 77% of respondents said they changed their consumption habits at home to save energy, and 55% said they adapted their means of transport for the same purpose. These behaviors reflect a growing awareness of the importance of reducing one's carbon footprint, both at a personal and community level.

Looking ahead, European citizens indicated that the EU should focus its efforts on supporting energy-poor households (53%) and reducing energy consumption (50%). Also, supporting the production of energy from renewable sources was mentioned by half of the respondents as a policy priority for achieving climate neutrality.

The impact of the war in Ukraine

The Eurobarometer survey also highlights economic pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which have contributed to higher energy costs and inflation. In this context, EU policies, especially energy policies, are seen as essential to support the transition to a greener and more resilient economy. European citizens strongly support the EU's energy transition measures and believe that they will not only contribute to reducing energy dependence, but also to job creation and the development of sustainable technologies.
