Romania"s accession to the European Union could generate quite a lot of money for Romanian farmers and entrepreneurs provided that the leaders of the local communities are well informed about available funds, make eligible projects and cooperate with representatives of other national and international communities.
In this context, over 50 representatives of local communities are taking part in the seminar "EU Funds and Business Opportunities in Rural Romania - A Practical Approach" organized by the US Government - USAID, the Department of Agriculture and the Center for Economic Education and Development. During the seminar, Brian Milton from Economic Development and Training Ltd - Ireland emphasized that Romania"s big agricultural challenge was to diminish the number of tiny family farms that can only provide for the respective family.
According to him the 3-4 million such farms of less than 2 hectares have no future and should be replaced by professional farms able to turn Romania from a foodstuffs importer into a major foodstuffs producer. He added that the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development was a great opportunity for Romania. The fund is structured into four axes and addresses small local communities (between 10,000 and 100,000 inhabitants). The fund stimulates public-private partnerships, multisectorial integration, innovation, cooperation, networking and the establishment of Local Initiatives Groups.
