Taking CFR Cluj from the C Division to playing Bayern Munich cost 85 million Euros

The head of CFR Cluj, Arpad Paszkany, announced that he is willing to sell the majority stake in the club. Potential buyers should know that over the last nine years, approximately 85 million Euros were invested in the club, which is currently the champion of Romania, and one of the few successful football businesses with modest beginnings. Immediately after the match with Bayern Munchen, Paszkany expressed his willingness for a change in the business: "No one is irreplaceable, football is perpetually changing. Unfortunately, only the financial backer needs to remain in place, but even in that particular case, if anybody was willing to get involved, I would gladly give up the majority stake. Except no one has made such a proposal so far".

Whereas in 2001, the team"s budget amounted to 100,000 Euros, its budget for the 2008-2009 period amounted to 38 million (including the cost of modernizing the stadium). Over the past few years, expenses have decreased to around 12 million Euros a season, partly due to the crisis. Arpad Paszkany has invested approximately 85 million Euros in the CFR Cluj project. This amount includes the nine year aggregated budget, as well as the expenses tied to the modernization of the stadium (over 20 million Euros), which is now Champion"s League level. The club"s budget evolved as follows: 2002 / 100,000 Euro, 2002-2003 / 350,000 Euros, 2003-2004 / 600,000 Euros, 2004-2005 / 1,000,000 Euros, 2005 - 2006 / 3,000,000 Euros, 2006 - 2007 / 6,000,000 Euros, 2007 - 2008 / 12,000,000 Euros, 2008 - 2009 / 38,000,000 Euros, 2009 - 2010/ 12,000,000 Euros, 2010 - 2011/ 12,000,000 Euros.

The players of CFR Cluj are currently appraised at approximately 34,150,000 Euros, and the best rated player is Lacina Traore - 3,300,000 Euros, even though the chairman of the club said that he would not sell Traore for less than 6,000,000 Euros.

The modern story of CFR Cluj began at the end of 2001, when Arpad Paszkany took over a team which hovered near the middle of the C Division, with a clear goal: get the team in the First League in four years. At the time, the team was fighting obscure clubs such as Şomcuta Mare and Târlungeni. IN 2002, the team graduated to the B Division. In the next season, when it graduated to the A Division, it changed no less than three coaches: Gheorghe Ciorceri, Adrian Coca and Aurel Şunda. After a year in which the goal of avoiding being relegated to the B Division, Şunda was replaced with Dorinel Munteanu. After that, CFR successfully played in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, beating Atletico Bilbao and Saint Etienne. The following season, the team began importing players, with Portuguese Semedo, Cadu and Manuel Jose being the first to join the team. After just one year, Dorinel Munteanu was replaced with Italian Cristiano Bergodi, who took the team to the UEFA Cup. Having done his job, he was replaced by Ioan Andone as the teams" main coach, who in the 2007-2008 season helped the team achieve its biggest success in its 100-year history - winning both the cup and the championship. The team also underwent radical changes, with some of the biggest player transfers in the domestic championship. When no one else expected it, before the beginning of the groups of the Champion"s League, Ioan Andone was dismissed and replaced by the virtually unknown Italian coach Maurizio Trombetta. The flurry of changes continued. Trombetta was replaced by Dushan Uhrin, later replaced by Antonio Conceicao, followed by another Italian called Andreea Mandorlini, who had the same fate as Ioan Andone. The team"s current coach is Sorin Cârţu.
