The Chairman of the Senate, Mircea Geoană, considers that the time is right for holding a public debate concerning the storage of phone data, as this issue has stirred reactions from the press and the civil society.
"I wish to be extremely clear when it comes to Romania"s democracy. We must strengthen the role of the state in preventing terrorist acts or others that might risk destabilizing the state, but at the same time, we have to be aware that people are still suspicious or fearful that such tools could be used for the consolidation of authoritarian tendencies in the Romanian state", said yesterday, while he was present at the ceremony for the handover of the portfolio for the Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs.
Mircea Geoană said he is deeply convinced that the "democratic substance" of the Romanian society will balance everything when it comes to the protection against the unjustified invasion of privacy and the infringement upon individual freedoms, according to Agerpres.
The Chairman of the Senate stated: "We did not have a revolution in this country and we did not spend 20 years developing a democracy to shift the balance the other way. That is why I am convinced that the state authorities will be extremely cautious in using this new tool".
Geoană said that he is convinced that new laws will be enacted which will provide real protection of the secrecy of phone calls and private life.
