The Government has allocated 10 million RON for upgrading the Iasi International Airport. The funds came form the National Development Fund. The upgrade could start this fall and includes the expansion and modernization of the runway. Nevertheless, other objectives require separate financing.
According to a study released this spring by Search Corporation, there are two expansion options: 162 million EUR (not including equipment) and 112 million EUR. In the first case (southern expansion) a 50 million EUR multiple-level parking lot is mandatory. In the second case (northern expansion), a one-level parking lot is sufficient. The Iasi County Council chose the cheaper solution, which brings the bill to a total of 120 million EUR, equipment included.
The feasibility study made by Search Corporation recommends the construction of a new runway of 3,000 meters, which is nearly double the existing 1,800 meter runway. The new runway would be 60 meters wide, allowing nearly all kinds of planes to land and take off. The existing runway and terminal would be used for smaller planes. The new runway would cost some 55 million EUR.
The cornerstone of the project is securing the land required for expansion. The future airport would occupy over 300 hectares of land, compared to 121 hectares at the moment. Arrangements have already been made with nearby land owners, most of whom are public institutions.
