British pharmaceutical group GlaxoSmithKline has announced that starting in the second semester of 2009, it will begin production of a drug used in curing HIV in Bra ov, which the company will begin exporting in 2011. Another drug, Seroxat, used in the treatment of depression, will be produced in Bra ov as well, following the relocation of other GSK production facilities. Patrick Desbiens, the new Country Manager of GSK Romania, said that the relocation of the production facilities will create an additional 100 jobs in the Braşov factory, on top of the 300 current jobs.

According to the quoted source, Bra ov will be used as a starting point for exporting Seroxat once the company finishes relocating the production facilities.

The drug will be exported in over 85 countries, and it will bring in EUR 300 million in export revenues in the next three years, on which the Romanian state will collect over 4 million Euros in taxes. The plan for transferring the production capabilities for Retrovir, the drug used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, is already underway. "The first exports are scheduled to begin in Q1 2011, after all the registration procedures will be completed", the management of the company said. GSK hopes the output of the Bra ov factory will exceed ten million of Retrovir capsules by 2011.

The management of the British company expects to reach the maximum output for Seroxat in 2010. GSK acquired Europharm Braşov in 1998, following a transaction worth 29.25 million dollars.
