The project for the construction of a high speed road between Timişoara and Szeged was discussed during a meeting between the representatives of the County Councils of Timiş and Csongrad. The only issue is that the Timişoara-Arad-Nădlac- Mako-Szeged highway is under construction, and traffic is expected to be extremely heavy. That is why Hungarian and Romanian authorities are considering the construction of a high speed road through the Cenad Customs to Timişoara, in order to help alleviate traffic in the area and to provide a shorter route to Timi oara. This would also require the construction of a bridge over the Mure river, in the Hungarian area of Cenad.
Ioan Maliţa, the Director of the Regional Roads and Bridges Department of Timi oara, said: "We have recently finalized a draft program by which we want to divert traffic in that area away from the cities, that is, to push forward some alternative roads going around the villages and communes, including consolidating the Cenad - border passing point sector, which we will have to widen from six to nine meters. We will not have an express highway, but we will have a high speed national road, which will not be going through cities". Mr. Maliţa estimates that, even though the highway will be built, it is far more convenient for inhabitants of Timi oara to travel abroad by using this high speed highway.
