IAR Gimbav, a company to be again put up for privatization by the State Assets Recovery Authority (AVAS), has landed enough orders to continue production until September 2008. According to union leader Arpad Suba, if the company does not go private by that time, the employees will see their employment contracts suspended. In his opinion, IAR may share the fate of Tractorul and Rulmentul, unless AVAS manages to complete privatization by September.
In the meantime, the privatization process will be resumed as the only prospective bidder, Eurocopter SAS, an EADS company, did not submit a final, binding and improved bid, as requested by the privatization commission. The deadline set by AVAS for the IAR privatization expired on October 21st. AVAS put IAR up for privatization in December 2006, but the only expression of interest came from Eurocopter SAS - France. As discussions did not lead to a conclusion, AVAS extended the privatization offer by 30-day periods several times, in line with Law 137/2002, hoping for a happy ending. AVAS currently holds 64.89% in IAR - Ghimbav.
