IDC: Romanian PC Market Continues Fast Growth

The Romanian PC market continued to grow rapidly in the first quarter of 2008 in terms of both shipments and value. According to the latest data from IDC, PC sales increased by 37.1% y/y, leading to a 41.1% increase in sales. Compared to 2007:Q4, PC purchases decreased by 22.9%. Notebooks accounted for 42.5% of the overall number of PCs delivered in 2008:Q1, compared to 33% in 2007.

While desktop sales decrease to a one-digit figure, the demand for notebooks gained 127.6% y/y in terms of units and 96.3% y/y in terms of value. "The moment when notebooks take the majority of the market is drawing near," said Diana Preda, a research analyst with IDC Romania. With the exception of the SOHO and the governmental sector, all other market segments require more notebooks than desktops.

The leading vendors in 2008:Q1 were HP, Fujitsu Siemens and Acer. Their aggregated market share exceeds 31% of the overall number of PCs delivered in the first three months of 2008. IDC"s market outlook points to a 52.3% growth this year.
