Taiwan-based computer manufacturer Acer secured the leading position on the notebook segment in Romania with a market share of 28.3 per cent at the end of the third quarter. Despite a decrease of approximately 26 per cent from the year-earlier figures, the Romanian subsidiary of the company has managed to increase market share by ten percentage points since the beginning of the year. "The top three players hold approximately 60 per cent of the market," said Acer Romania Sales Manager Bogdan Iftemie, referring to Acer, Asus and Hewlett Packard.
The Taiwanese group ranks second on the video projector segment of the Romanian market with a market share of 14.6 per cent and fourth on the LCD segment with a market share of 7 per cent. Compared to the third quarter of 2008, Acer Romania has increased market share by 6 per cent despite a decrease in notebook sales from 28,456 units in Q3/08 to 21,034 units in Q3/09.
• Target for 2010: a top five position on the desktop segment
Acer Romania Sales Manager Bogdan Iftemie stated that the company was planning to become one of the top five players on the desktop segment in 2010, despite a massive decline of the respective segment. "We plan to become one of the top five players on the desktop segment in the final quarter of 2009 or the first quarter of 2010. On the display segment, we want to make it to the top three on short term," Iftemie said.
Projections for the near future include further growth on the notebook segment, especially due to increased sales to end-users and small- and medium-sized businesses.

Acer is the world"s third largest player in terms of overall PC sales and the second largest player in terms of notebook sales. The company has achieved the fastest growth to the top five positions. Acer Group has over 6,000 employees worldwide, with Y2008 revenues reaching 16.65 billion USD, up by 18 per cent from 2007.
Acer sold 30 million PCs last year and estimates sales of 40 million PCs in 2009. Deliveries of IT equipment worldwide rendered better results than initially projected for the third quarter. Global PC sales increased by 0.5 per cent in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the year-earlier period, after three consecutive quarters of sales decline (on a year-on-year basis).
