Over 60% of Romania"s urban roads and streets were modernized by the end of 2007, according to the country"s National Statistics Institute (INS). At the end of 2007, the total length of urban roads was 26,168 kilometers, of which 15,757 kilometers modernized. Also at the end of 2007, the overall urban environment in the country included green areas (parks, gardens, playgrounds etc) measuring 20,724 hectares, equal to an average of 17.5 square meters per capita. The overall habitable surface was 390,233 hectares, up by 12,308 hectares from 2006. This means that 12,308 hectares were added to the urban/rural communities.
