A nuclear war is a war without winners, says Iulian Fota, a specialist in international relations, who pointed out that a nuclear confrontation would lead to a planetary catastrophe. His statements come in the context of recent remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who once again threatened the United States with nuclear war, warning that a Third World War would not only affect Europe.
Iulian Fota told us: "Sergey Lavrov is not a decision-maker; he is just a mouthpiece and has no influence over how things are run in Russia. He receives the decisions made by Putin and applies them in his area of responsibility; he is not perceived as an important player in Russia. This talk of nuclear weapons does not scare anyone, because everyone has nuclear weapons - the Americans, the French, and the British - so the use of nuclear weapons would be a catastrophe that would equally affect everyone. The response to the use of nuclear weapons is also with nuclear weapons, and we reach a planetary catastrophe. The threat of nuclear weapons is devalued, and it is devalued primarily by Medvedev because the Russians have made countless threats with nuclear weapons - it's a way to try to intimidate less educated citizens and the general public."
According to Mr. Fota, there is speculation that, in a bilateral U.S.-Russian communication, the Russians were explained the possible consequences if they were to use a tactical weapon. The expert also points out that even China rejects a nuclear war and has tried to discourage Russia in this regard.
"Putin is in a bad position, but it would be so easy for him to withdraw from this madness! He does not want to give in, but neither can the West give in, because now he attacked Ukraine; next year, he could attack Romania, Poland, and the Baltic countries," the cited source suggests.
Iulian Fota concludes: "There is another aspect to highlight - exactly during this period in which the Russians are threatening to use nuclear weapons, they are also waging a wide-scale hybrid attack against the West, with increasingly bold and dangerous actions - sabotage, threats of eliminating leaders, etc. In other words, Russia threatens with nuclear weapons but is in the midst of a hybrid offensive against the West.
I want to underline something that no one has noticed: at the NATO summit in the United States, NATO issued two warnings - one to the Russians, to stop all this covert hybrid offensive, and another to China, to stop supporting Russia. Therefore, we do not need Lavrov's statement to realize that things are serious; these NATO warnings are enough."
