Legluma (The Vegetable Garden)

These days I"ve realized that we"ve moved to a different plane of existence, which I would summarize as "the vegetable garden." It is the sum of three different aspects: the law, the joke that the law has become and we, the vegetables.

Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea defied PSD saying that the law stipulates that it is the minister who appoints the head of the Ministry"s intelligence division. If Oprea had said that on television, for television watchers, it wouldn"t have mattered. TV watchers are stupid. We are ready to buy any kind of bull manure we are served. We are vegetables. But, to go in front of the PSD bosses and say something like that, that"s defiance.

This is the explanation offered by a notorious journalist as to why Oprea"s argument angered all of PSD"s leadership and made even those who supported Oprea to agree to have him punished and stripped of all political support. The journalist did not say this was normal, but he did not appear surprised either. In fact, he appeared as he believed everything was normal, only that he didn"t say it explicitly. I could believe that the journalist"s explanation is correct.

But I"m surprised. It looks like the law has become some sort of a sick joke which, in a context such as the ongoing Oprea - Ardelean scandal, does cause anger and disgust as a normal, natural consequence. And then you have some "opinion leaders" who explain us the facts on precisely this kind of a note. We are a vegetable garden.

Adrian Nastase claims that, behind Oprea"s decision to appoint Ardelean, is Boc. And behind Boc, is Basescu and that the whole thing is pure treason. Oprea betrayed PSD, Boc betrayed the coalition agreement and Basescu betrayed himself (i.e. did not step forward once again).

Again, I can believe Nastase"s scenario, too. But a law is a law! No matter what scenario you may imagine, you just can"t demand that a minister be dismissed accusing him of doing something which the law says he should do.

Did Boc betray the coalition agreement? Quite plausible. But is the agreement legal?

The law says that the Prime Minister-designate assembles the Cabinet. Good.

The parties agreed on equal shares in the ruling system. Good

PSD nominated Oprea, and Boc accepted. Good.

Now PSD doesn"t want Oprea anymore. Yesterday, it appeared that Boc was forced by the agreement to dismiss him.

What about the law? Did the law allow Boc to dismiss Oprea? What did Oprea do wrong as a minister? Nothing.

If I was Oprea and Boc dismissed me, I would sue him. He fired me for no reason.

How can the agreement be stronger than the law?

Of course it is stronger.

Because this is a vegetable garden.

Maybe this is the explanation for Stolojan"s ridiculous resignation from the role of Prime Minister-designate. Stolojan the accountant would never have adapted to the meaninglessness of the law in a vegetable garden.

Maybe this is the explanation for the lack of reaction from the public, the politicians, the Presidency and the other institutions of the State in the face of the rigorous argumentation published by Bursa, which demonstrated that the Parliament includes citizens who did not legally become Members of Parliament.

Everything is a vegetable garden: the Presidency, the Government, the Parliament. And we deserve them all, because we are vegetables.

In fact, they say that every nation has the leaders it deserves.

Oprea Quit

Minister Gabriel Oprea yesterday announced his resignation from the office of Minister of Interior. He explained the decision saying that he did not want to be a puppet of certain interest groups and that his only intention had been to run the Ministry of Administration and Interior solely in the country"s best interest. "I was not allowed to carry out my duties, so I resigned," Oprea explained, stressing that a minister was entitled to appoint the leadership of the central structures. Oprea also stressed that the appointments he had made were not a violation of party discipline and that they were solely based on professional criteria. Premier Emil Boc accepted Gabriel Oprea"s resignation.
