The German-based Lidl & Schwarz Co. & KG, which also runs the Kaufland chain of supermarkets, has announced plans to invest some 5 million EUR in a commercial centre in Galati. Nicusor Ciumacenco, Deputy Mayor of Galati, stated that the investor had already received the construction permit so works could begin towards the end of the year. The inauguration is scheduled in two years.

"The overall surface of land earmarked for the project is 4,698 square meters, of which 4,489 square meters is property of the Galati-based Unicorn, while 209 square meters is property of the Local Council, which has been asked to concede it or rent it. The commercial area will measure 1,516 square meters, of which 1,446 square meters as commercial space and 261 square meters as auxiliary space. The supermarket will also have a parking area of 2,912 square meters and a green area of 270 square meters," said Ciumacenco.

Lidl & Schwarz is present in Romania since 2005 through the Kaufland chain of thirty stores countrywide. Kaufland Romania had nearly 3,000 employees at the end of last year. Schwarz Group concluded last year with over 44 billion EUR in turnover and over 200,000 employees in Europe. The German-based retailer has more than 800 supermarkets in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria.
