The Metro Group focuses on Eastern Europe and Asia, which are very important markets, offering great potential. Last year, Metro Group"s regional sales percentages were: Eastern Europe 21%, Western Europe 32,5%, Asia-Africa 2,4% and Germany 44,1%, according to data from the German group"s annual financial report.
Last year, Metro Cash&Carry Romania sales rose 15% compared to 2005, reaching 1,43 billion EUR. Company representatives said that this year Metro will not open other cash&carry stores in Romania, the current strategy being to remodel existing stores. For 2007, Metro Group expects sales to rise in Romania, despite the very strong competition. In 2006, regional sales of Metro Cash&Carry were as fololows: 34% in Eastern Europe, 4,7% in Asia and Africa, 19,1% in Germany and 42,2% in Western Europe.
In Romania, the Metro Group operates 23 Metro Cash& Carry stores and 8 Real stores. This year, the company intends to open 8 new Real stores, according to Michael Wiedmann, General Manager of Metro Cash& Carry. The first Real store in Romania was opened in March last year, the investment in such a store amounting to 15-20 million EUR.
