Romania spent 2980.7 million lei on R&D in 2008, i.e. 0.59% of the GNP, up 0.06% over 2007, according to a press release by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
Over 43,502 employees worked in R&D at the end of 2008, mainly in line with the number of workers in the sector at the end of 2007.
2513.5 million lei, i.e. 84.3% of the 2980.7 million lei spent on research in 2008, were used for current expenses and 467.2 million lei for capital expenses, (15.7%). The weight of expenses for equipping units which performed R&D activities decreased 4.3% in 2008 over 2007.
Out of the financing sources for R&D expenditures for 2008, public funds ranks first (70.1% compared to 67.1% in 2007), followed by corporate funding (23.3% over 26.9%).
Governmental units were the largest beneficiaries of public funding sources, (48.7%), followed by higher education units (34.5%) and companies (16.7%).
