The leu posted significant gains, in the second half of Friday"s interbank trading session, and the exchange rate dropped below 4.3 lei/Euro, from 4.32 lei/Euro in the beginning of the session, due to the selling of Euros.
Some analysts consider that the appreciation of the leu was caused by profit-taking from investors and by orders from commercial sellers, but others suspect that the NBR intervened to strengthen the leu.
"The positive evolution of the main equity markets favors the evolution of the leu, but it may not be enough to compensate for the gloomy local situation", ING Bank analysts say, who added that most likely, the leu will follow a downward trend.
"The level of 4.35 lei/Euro remains likely to be reached in the coming sessions", the quoted analysts predict.
The presumed intervention of the NBR, comes after Adrian Vasilescu, advisor to the governor of the NBR, on Thursday warned that the scandal in the Parliament affects the exchange rate. "The exchange rate has its weak spots, and the scandal in the Parliament around the vote on cutting VAT for basic foods and the taxation of pensions has caused the leu to depreciate against the Euro", Mr. Vasilescu said.
Adrian Vasilescu added: "Whereas two days ago the other currencies in the region lost ground, it is now the turn of the leu to depreciate".
