The countries of the European Union must tackle the issue of durable recovery collectively, Nicolae Idu, head of the European Commission Office in Bucharest said yesterday, during a roundtable, referring to the Europe 2020 Strategy, a recent proposal by leaders in the region.
He said that the EU needs such a strategy, because the unemployment rate reached 10% in the region, industrial output dropped by almost 15%, reaching the level of the year 1999, the public budgets of the EU member countries are running deficits (the overall deficit exceeds 7% of the EU GNP), and the issue of the public debt is extremely urgent. Mr. Idu added that the objective of the Europa 2020 strategy is to overcome the crisis and to strengthen the European economy.
As part of the Europe 2020 Strategy, the EU proposes growth that would be intelligent - by relying on knowledge and innovation, durable by using resources efficiently, and inclusive, by increasing the number of jobs.
The EU 2020 Strategy will be featured on the agenda of the spring meeting of the European Council, which will be held on March 25th-26th.
