Novartis AG, Switzerland"s second largest drug producer, has acquired 25% in Alcon Inc, the eye-care division of Nestle SA, for 10.4 billion USD which is about 200 million USD less than when the deal was originally announced in April. The reduced sum reflects a dividend paid by Nestle for the Alcon shares in May. This is the first step of a process intended to make Novartis the majority shareholder in Alcon. The drug producer has decided to acquire 77% in Alcon, the world"s leading eye-care product manufacturer, especially known for contact lenses and glaucoma treatment. Novartis has a right to buy and Nestle has the option to sell the remaining 52% between January 2010 and July 2011 for up to 28 billion USD. Nestle would use the cash to pay-off some of their debts.
