The Romanian pharmaceutical market grew 22.5% y/y in the first quarter of 2009, reaching 1,990.2 million RON or approximately 466.5 million EUR according to the market researcher Cegedim. According the Cegedim CEO Petru Craciun, market growth is hindered by a decrease in the purchasing power and an increase in retail prices.
However, the optimization and more intense promotion of the medicines portfolio is a growth factor, especially in the current state of economic uncertainty. "Based on the information we have and the current situation, the forecast for 2009 points to a 10% increase in the RON-denominated value of the market and a 3% decrease in the EUR-denominated value, based on an annualized exchange rate of 5.175 RON/EUR," Craciun added.
Commenting on the Health Ministry"s plan to create therapeutic guidelines and protocols, Craciun said "they can only apply to a few specific medical conditions. We, as a country, are not prepared to sustain this process." He pointed out that "there are some 25,000 ways to express the 8,000 - 9,000 known illnesses which are classified in the internationally standardized groups. Such logistic cannot be implemented in Romania at this point," the Cegedim CEO concluded.
