The Minister of Education, Ligia Deca, stressed the importance of respecting fundamental rights in strengthening democracy and the need for students to be as well informed as possible on this topic. Encouraging human rights education, Deca launched an appeal to teachers to transmit to students values such as respect, knowledge of rights and the promotion of tolerant discourse.

"International Human Rights Day - a good context to remind us that respecting fundamental rights is indispensable for democracy," the minister noted. Ligia Deca stressed that teachers have an essential role in forming a generation of citizens who know and defend human rights. The minister encouraged teachers to explain to students how important it is to know their rights and fight for them. She also highlighted the danger posed by hate speech, xenophobia and racism on democracy.

"Dear teachers, teach your children how important it is to know their rights and fight for them. Teach them how harmful to democracy the violation of the rights of others, hate speech or xenophobic or racist manifestations are," Deca wrote. The minister thanked those who, through personal example, demonstrate to children the importance of genuine respect for human rights, regardless of the subject taught.
