Romania will produce some 200,000 tons of biodiesel per year starting this year, according to Toma Adrian Dinu, Director General with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Next to bioethanol, biodiesel is a biofuel (fuel from a renewable source with a low level of pollution) and will be mixed with oil diesel as of July. The ratio will be at least 2% biodiesel to 98% oil diesel. The EU generates 75% of the world biodiesel production.
Biodiesel is produced from rape and soybean. The global rape production amounted to over 48 million tons in 2005-2006, of which 15.3 million tons in the EU. Romania"s rape production was 0.18 million tons and is estimated to reach 520,000 tons in 2006-2007. The EU will need 4 million tons of biofuel this year, 12 million tons in 2010 and 21 million tons in 2015. Romania will need 100,000 tons per year until 2010 and 300,000 tons per year after 2010.
