Romania remains continues to rank high in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) as far as EU countries are concerned. The authorities" effort to counter corruption has not led to an improvement in Romania"s image as a corruption haven. The annual report of Transparency International - Romania, released yesterday indicates that the CPI continues to obe very low in Romania compared to the other EU members. On a scale from 1 to 10, Romania scored 3.8, by one tenth more than in 2007, whereas the EU average is 6.62. Nevertheless, with a one-tenth increase, Romania managed not to be the last among EU members, outranking Bulgaria, which landed a 0.5 decrease compared to 2007. And yet, there is little reason to rejoice: "Romania"s index is by no means a reason to be proud or satisfied, considering that the increase is only 0.1 (...). It"s like the temperature of a patient decreases from 39.8 to 39.7 (Celsius) - it"s well too far from the optimal," Transparency International - Romania commented. "A one-tenth increase is not an victory, but rather an indication that our sustainability is improving at snail speed, whereas our credibility is very poor," TI-R added. "In the last ten years, we"ve progressed only four-tenths," stressed TI-R Executive Director Victor Alistar. A simple calculation would indicate that, at the current pace of 0.4 in ten years, Romania will reach the EU average of 6.62 in... 2078. At global level, Romania ranks 70th out of 151, outranked, among others, by Samoa, Namibia, Bhutan and even Georgia. Denmark, New Zealand and Sweden lead the top, where as Russia, Belarus and Syria close it.
