Romania will receive the first tranche of structural and cohesion funds in the following days after the European Commission approved five of the seven operational programs Romania has proposed, the European commissioner for regional politics, Danuta Hubner said.
Hubner will attend on July 13 the launch of one of the five approved programs, called the Regional Operational Program. This is meant to help Romania"s underdeveloped regions. The other approved programs refer to transportation, environment, technical assistance and economic competitiveness.
The agreement for granting the funds was signed today by Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Hubner. "The money should help us reduce the gaps separating Romania from other European states," said Tariceanu.
Romania will receive 19 billion euros from the European Commission in the next seven years to implement the programs.
Romania is the 15th state of the total 27 EU members to complete negotiations regarding the funds. Hubner said the real challenge resides in implementing the programs. The official declined to reveal the two operational programs that were not approved by the Commission yet government sources said these refer to administration and human resources.
