Romania"s foreign debt currently amounts to 90 billion Euros. The Romanian state owes 18.5 billion Euros, the NBR - 9 billion Euros, and private debt accounts for 17 billion, according to data presented on Friday by Adrian Vasilescu, advisor to the governor of the Romanian Central Bank (NBR).

"Romania"s foreign debt, which has reached 90 billion Euros, represents a major problem for Romania. It needs to be paid. Out of the total, the Romanian state only owes 18.5 billion Euros, the NBR owes 9 billion Euros as part of a very special loan - SOAP, and the remaining amount represents private debt. Romanians spent 17 billion Euros on one million cars. Romania is lacking roads and highways, but it"s got plenty of cars", Vasilescu said, as quoted by Agerpres.

The official of the NBR insisted on explaining the statement of the governor of the NBR, Mugur Isărescu, who said that 17 billion Euros of Romania"s foreign debt come from private households.

"I"ve seen comments made about the statement of the NBR governor concerning the 17 billion Euros of private debt. The governor only said that the 17 billion Euros are found in the homes of Romanians, without accusing anybody. The governor of the NBR did not say that the NBR borrowed money so Romanians could buy cookers and electronics. Romanians need to improve their economic education, because countries that come out ahead have a culture of saving and borrowing. People that lack that education can"t possibly succeed. Unfortunately, we are seriously lacking in this department", Adrian Vasilescu said.
