The electric energy resources reached 65,556.8 million kWh last year, up by 3,732.2 million kWh (+6%) from 2007. The increase in the power resources was due especially to an increase in production by 4,079.7 million kWh (+6.7%). According to a report from the National Statistics Institute (INS), the final electric energy consumption of 2008 was 53,030.8 million kWh, up by 4.2% from 2007. Public lighting consumption increased by 10.6%, while individual consumption advanced by 7.1%. Exports increased by 1,810.3 million kWh, that is 53.9%.
The primary energy resources increased by 2.4% in 2008, while electric energy resources gained 6%. The main primary energy resources totalled 40,414.91 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent in 2008, down by 1,007.8 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent. The internal output was 24,296.9 thousand t.o.e., up by 0.2% from 2007, while imports reached 16,118.0 thousand t.o.e., down by 6.1%. Thermo-power plant production decreased by 1,369.9 million kWh (-3.6%). Hydropower production and nuclear power production increased by 1,190.8 million kWh (+7.5%), that is, 4,258.8 million kWh (+61.1%). Of the overall consumption recorded in 2008, 64.3% went to industries, 15.5% to individuals, 7.9% to exports, 11.2% to technical consumption and 1.1% to public lighting. Of the overall production, 56.3% came from thermo-power plants, 26.4% from hydropower plants, 17.4% from nuclear plants and 1.4% from imports.
