• World steel output down 8%
In 2009, Romania produced 2,699 million metric tons (mmt) of steel, down 46.4% over the 5,035 mmt of steel output in 2008, the World Steel Association (WSA) announced. However, in the last month of 2009, Romania produced 270,000 tons of steel, a 54.1% increase over December 2008.
According to data from the WSA, the global steel production decreased 8% over last year, reaching 1,220 million metric tons. WSA says that output decreased on all the major markets, including in the European Union, the two Americas, and the Community of Independent States (CIS). Conversely, Asia - in particular China and India, as well as the Middle East saw their metallurgic output increase last year.
China"s steel output was 567.8 mmt last year, up 13.5% over 2008. This is an annual record for a single country. China continued to increase its share of the steel market, accounting for 47% of the global output in 2009, up 9% over 2008.
Asia output 795.4 mmt of steel in 2009, up 3.5% YOY. Asia"s share of the steel market reached 65% in 2009, from 58% in 2008.
The output of the EU27 area dropped 29.7% last year, to 139.1 mmt, whereas North America"s output dropped 33.9% to 82.3 mmt. USA output dropped 36.4% YOY in 2009, to 58.1 mmt.
The output of the CIS (Community of Independent States) dropped 14.7% in 2009. Russia output 59.9 mmt of steel, down 12.5% over 2008, and Ukraine"s production dropped to 29.8 mmt, (-20.2% YOY).
