The owners of "Polyus Gold International" Ltd. and "Polymetal International" Plc of Russia take into account the merger of the two mining companies in order to create the ninth largest producer of gold, sources close to the situation say, quoted by Bloomberg.
According to them, the discussions have been conducted between the owners of the companies, not between the two management teams of the two gold producers. The officials of the two companies made no comments concerning a potential deal.
"Such a merger would not only allow Polyus to get listed on the London Stock Exchange, but also provide access to the expertise of Polymetal in the construction of new mines", said Dmitri Kolomitsin, an analyst at "Morgan Stanley". In his opinion, in a potential merger, "Polymetal" would benefit from the "huge resources" of "Polyus".
