Sales of luxury jewels are on the rise

Luxury is more of an investment than a way of improving one"s personal image, at least according to jewelry distributors, who report increasing business in the elegant boutiques located in the central area of Bucharest.

Positioning on the luxury industry benchmark location, Calea Victoriei, fully contributed to their success even in these times of crisis, retailers say.

Andreea Matei, "Frey Wille": "The average value of a trade doubled compared to last year"

Andreea Matei, store manager at "Frey Wille", the Viennese brand of artistic jewelry, inspired by Greek and Egyptian art and by the works of major painters, told us that sales have increased about 30% in the first six months of 2011, compared to last year"s similar period.

She said: "2010 is not just a reference year for us, considering that we have just arrived in Bucharest. However, 2011 was a good year (ed. note: for business)."

Andreea Matei went on to say: "Customers aren"t just buying jewelry, they are investing, and the average value of an order has doubled compared to last year", reaching 1,500 Euros.

The most sought after products made by "Frey Wille" are gold plated jewels, which, according to Andreea Matei, derive their value from the quality of their execution, not from the amount of gold they contain. "In this industry, the advice provided to customers and treating them well is what really matters", Mrs. Matei said.

For "Frey Wille", opening a store on Calea Victoriei was a very good choice. "It took us six months to break even on our store opened in Romania (ed. note: in October 2009), instead of the 18 months we had initially expected", the official of the company said, who added that she expects sales to increase in 2011.

Alex Dudu, "La Rosa Bijoux": "Our clients favor quality over price"

Alex Dudu, store manager of "La Rosa Bijoux", which sells engagement and wedding rings made in Turkey, told us that the brand has been growing since it entered the market, by opening the store on Calea Victoriei. This year "business hasn"t shrunk, but it hasn"t grown either", Mr. Dudu said, who considers that the brand currently has a better position in the market.

Of course, ring businesses also fluctuate depending on season. It seems that people prefer to get married between January and September, because, according to Alex Dudu, "October, November and December are < < dead > > months".

The best sellers of "La Rosa" are the wedding and engagement rings with diamonds, made out of 18k gold: "Our clients favor quality over price". The brand expects higher sales in 2012.

In the "La Rosa" store, prices for handmade wedding rings, of gold and platinum, prices range from 3,200 lei to 5,900 lei / pair, plus the cost of the diamonds, if clients want their rings to have any.

The price of a diamond engagement ring varies on the amount of material used, but the number and size of diamonds account or used are the most important part of the end price. Gentlemen pay from 1,300 lei and 14,250 lei for the jewel which they hope will get them a "yes" from their "soul mate".

30-40% turnover increase for "Oxette"

Alexandra Popescu, country manager for "Oxette", said that, compared to the first part of 2010, business has seen an increase of 30-40%. "We intend to open three more stores in Bucharest, and in Constanţa", Mrs. Popescu said.

The best sellers of the company are the "Oxette" watches, with colored silicone bracelets.

Writing instruments remain the best sellers for "Montblanc"

Anca Vasile, brand manager for "Montblanc", the German maker of fountain pen and other writing instruments, told us that sales were good in the first half of 2011. This is due to the fact that the company opened a new boutique at the heart of the Romanian luxury industry: on Calea Victoriei (Victoriei avenue). Writing instruments still account for the bulk of the company"s sales, even though in 2010, Montblanc underwent a rebranding process following which its name now appears on watches and other accessories.
