"Siemens" AG, Germany"s largest engineering company, received an order for from the Russian Railways (RZD), worth 580 million Euros, to supply a total of 54 modular electric trains to be used for the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi.
A firm order worth about 410 million euros for 38 "Desiro" trains has been placed, and a preliminary contract for 16 additional units has been signed, the company said today.
Desiro trains are intended for regional transportation. They can reach 160 km/h, and their commissioning in Russia is planned for 2013.
RZD owns the largest railway network in Europe.
