Temperature records are falling one after another in 2023. A new warmth record for December has been recorded in Spain - with a peak of 29.9°C in Malaga, in southern Andalusia, according to the Spanish National Meteorological Agency (AEMET). This summer-like temperature exceeds the previous record of 29.4°C in peninsular Spain, recorded on December 10, 2010, near Granada, also in Andalusia, by 0.5°C, as specified by Aemet. This occurs in the context of warm air currents circulating in the southern Iberian Peninsula for several days, leading to local temperature records - 27.6°C in Murcia and 27.3°C in Alicante, on the Mediterranean coast. Such temperature levels would be "much less likely" without the "climate changes observed globally and in Spain," emphasizes Aemet. Spain, accustomed to high temperatures, has been facing increasingly frequent and closer heatwaves for several years, sometimes outside the summer months, a concern for researchers. According to Aemet, the frequency of heatwave episodes has tripled in the last decades in Spain, which is on the front line against global warming. The duration of the meteorological summer has increased by ten days per decade since the 1980s.
